In the tradition of Jorge Luis Borges, W.H. Auden, and J.R.R. Tolkien, Nancy Jasper finds poetic inspiration in the medieval Icelandic sagas. Her terse and direct word pictures open doors and windows into the world of these violent, complex tales. We sit like the shapeshifting swallow, listening, and are changed. We wander, like the bear, out of a fairy tale and into the mind—cunning, lucid, and fearful—of a mythmaker. Like the trickster, we are tricked into seeing the sagas anew. “The poet,” Jasper reminds us, “is formed from spittle, the honey mixed with blood.” Nancy Marie Brown, Author of Song of the Vikings Snorri and the Making of Norse Myths Nancy Jasper is a Pushcart Prize nominee. She writes with playfulness and intensity, with unexpected imagery and sly verbal textures. She takes these stories at odd angles, finding her way toward their complicated heart. Nancy’s work has appeared in micro-chapbooks, academic journals, an anthology of urban poetry, and a publication of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Her poems and essays have been heard on the Rhode Island affiliate of National Public Radio.

What a page-turner and cutting-edge book! Move over, Game of Thrones. Nancy Jasper’s poems are points of entry into the fabulist, (under)world of Icelandic myth that has fascinated her for a lifetime. Thankfully, her intrigue is now ours. Meet Snorri, keeper of Norse legends and conniving politician: "…He would learn to love libraries/and to scheme east/across the water/ He would learn the world is wide/and its coasts/deeply indented…"Poetry and some essays (akin to a field guide) deftly weave these origin stories, with wit and warmth, to great effect. (She knows how to step out of the way to let a good story tell itself). Equally brilliant with imagery and allegory, Jasper re-animates complex motives and emotions. (I’m reminded of Tomas Transtroemer and Leonard Nathan). A rich suggestiveness rises up from her simple lines and utter clarity. The poems accomplish their allegorical mission – ferrying shadowy, prescient characters into the light of the modern square (so, you think we live in menacing times??)
Like Transtroemer, she trawls the borders between worlds. In this mythic, double world, Jasper finds tender in the monstrous (the giantess Gunnlod, "her enormous brain held fold upon fold of poetry…. fleshy and archival") and humanity everywhere. A villain is a scholar is a warrior is a poet is a grieving father, hero/anti-hero preferring "the integrity of revenge". Meet the star, Egil. … "The old sociopath was known/for the disproportions of his violence/the strategic /deployment of his kennings/his capacity for lament. / When necessary/he could turn himself into metaphors/A good poem/almost saved his life…" I wonder who could resist reading to the end? A magnificent (and very fun) book!
